A story ~ Sky High
For when virtual reality (VR) replaces most, if not all of actual reality:
*I will only talk about VR because it has the potential to wipe out most of actual reality completely. Augmented reality, is somewhat of an undecided middle-man in the era I'm writing in, so I won't address it, for simplicity.
One of my most favourite experiences is taking a walk, especially around my neighbourhood.
I could breathe in fresh air, wear a nice coat and soak up the sun. I also find it fulfilling to watch the waxy green trees dance in the wind, as if they were waving to me. And, when I peer out across the lake, the waves bedazzle like a freshly minted diamond.
I realize that I am privileged to have such a peaceful experience without worrying about war, starvation, poverty, disability or something even worse than imaginable. Because of that, I'm sure VR will evolve to match such an exclusive experience, if it hasn't already. I think a nice moment such as walking by a lake on a sunny day should be something any person can experience when they want to. It's a way of achieving peace of mind for me, and I hope it could be for other people too.
But, I'm going to be honest here, I will miss the days when VR haven't overlapped onto actual reality.
As it is, VR are created by man, so any landscape, including one with my neighbourhood inside a VR world is going to be cultured, curated, pasteurized and specialized for humans, by humans. The medium at which we are experiencing reality in these worlds will be done with an artificial plane. Actual reality, however, is a bit chaotic, has physical limitations, is less efficient and is less "dolled up" than these other types of reality.
It's also worth it to mention that virtual reality can't replace physiological functioning like: eating, sleeping and pooping...so yeah.
So, why would one miss actual reality?
For me personally, it's because there's a moment of awe when you realize that the sunrise you see isn't just a glossy, digital imprint; it really is a big, hot ball of gas set ablaze in the morning sky.
The fact that something so beautiful in this universe of coincidences could exist truly feels like a miracle to me. You could even say, "right now, I'm being bathed in the rays of a gigantic star that gives me vitamin D and tickles photons on my face". You could really say that if you watched a sunrise in actual reality.
I guess though, beauty and filth, aesthetically and emotionally speaking can go both ways when you talk about the different realities out there. For me, in actual reality, it is knowing that the beauty I see almost had no chance of existing if you speak in universal odds, yet, I am seeing it despite that, which makes it so tantalizing to me.
(Side note: I think actual reality is becoming more of a luxury and augmented reality (assuming it’s a precursor to virtual reality), especially through our phones and devices, is becoming the norm. “When life was simpler” is becoming a reservoir of renewed nostalgia we’ve been sucking on for the last decade. 80s and early 00s technology, and old fashion trends is now mainstream in the late 2010s and early 2020s. Even the videos that my parents and I watch on YouTube include the romanticization of “farm life”, which is seen an refreshing trend nowadays with the rise of cottagecore and rural lifestyle videos.)
For another person though, someone who goes through more shit than I do knows that such filth doesn't have to exist when they first enter in VR (not all of it at least; sometimes you can't change people's behaviour), and it could even be erased completely by those who monitor the VR world. With such limitations gone, one can only hope to be able to unravel more possibilities in a VR world.
In fact, if you put me on a list for an all inclusive VR experience, I'll gladly take on that opportunity. Who wouldn't want to be in a world where anything, just about anything could be possible?
Depending on what perspective one comes from, each of us sees the beauty of actual reality and virtual reality differently. As I am typing this, the tech giants of today act very innocently about the development of their VR, since our technology just, isn't quite there yet. However, once virtual reality becomes very, very real (pun intended), we are going to have to ask ourselves this question of how much virtual leg room are we willing to give away our physical leg space to.
Nevertheless, how much do you think virtual reality will influence, or already impacts the society you live in?
How does it influence the lifestyle you have?
How do you think VR impacts how you see actual reality?

While listening to this song:
You could look at.....RPG games with amazing world-building. It could be mobile, PC or on a console.
You could be with.....anyone of your choosing.
You could do something.....that lets you explore this virtual world, even if you don't have a VR headset yet. Have lots of fun while you're playing this game~
You could eat or drink.....pop in a juicy Hi-Chew into your mouth while you play :)
You could remember that.....the line between the digital and actual are blurring every single day with every new technological invention that comes out. Robots, VR headsets, augmented reality, even using the internet on our phones are examples of this. If the boundaries of reality are changing, then our perception of it will change too. What we determine to be our 'real life', our careers and livelihoods, may exist entirely online, if we so choose to live that way. I personally cannot imagine doing such a thing, but what about you?
